The chocolate chip cookie originated in the US as a drop cookie, and it features mini chocolate chips as the distinguishing ingredient. Some recipes call for oatmeal and there are vegetarian cookies available as well with vegan chocolate chips and even vegan margarine.
The chocolate chip cookie was originally invented by Ruth Wakefield and Sue Brides in 1938. The US duo prepared the recipe when she operated the Toll House Inn and some say the recipe was actually devised by accident. She thought the chocolate would melt, making the cookies chocolate. It is now known that this is false, and that she had been experimenting with a butterscotch cookie at the time. She then went on to invent the Toll House Cookie, as it was referred to at the time, and then the chocolate chip cookie.
During the second world war, soldiers from Massachusetts were sent overseas and they were sent cookies in care packages by their family. They would share out the cookies between them and soon they were writing to their families requesting more of the delicious treats. The Toll House Cookie recipe was then released to accommodate for the nationwide craze and that is how the Toll House Cookie became the infamous chocolate chip cookie.
